Geoscience Australia Web Services


Geoscience Australia provides web services for public use that allow access to our data without having to store datasets locally. Geoscience Australia supports a variety of web service protocols, including Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) services and ESRI mapping and image services.

OGC Services

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) developed the Web Map Service (WMS), Web Feature Service (WFS) and Web Coverage Services (WCS) specifications to facilitate the interoperability of geospatial data.
  • A WMS produces an image (e.g. PNG, JPG) of geospatial data which can be queried to return a simple attribute set.
  • A WFS delivers all the geospatial data in XML format and allows more complex querying of a dataset.
  • A WCS provides access to coverage data in forms that are useful for client-side rendering, as input into scientific models, and for other clients.

How to use Web Services

To use Geoscience Australia's web services you will need access to software which can communicate with the web services, such as an online web portal or a GIS application. The links below provide instructions for using some commonly available desktop applications (both proprietary and open source) to access the OGC web services and ESRI mapping and image services provided by Geoscience Australia. Not all of the services will work in all of the software systems.

AREMI Buildings

Description:This web service shows areas or locations occupied by an existing high-density urban development or known individual building structures in peri-urban and remote locations. Data used in this service is of varying levels of coverage and quality since it is aggregated from a variety of sources. The intended purpose of the service is to provide preliminary, first-pass information about urban environment, building structures and their distribution in landscape, as one of constraints on future development. Users should carry out further and more detailed investigations because this information is not meant to be a definitive source or support engineering phase planning. Acreage Release - Marine Environmental Data

Description:This is the Acreage Release Marine Environmental Data compiled web service to be updated each year with acreage release. It contains the following publicly available datasets, for the 2016 Acreage Release - Marine Survey Towed-video Transects, Marine Sediments Database Samples, Australian Seascapes, Seabed Mud Content on the Northwest Shelf, Seabed Sand Content of the Northwest Shelf and Seabed Gravel Content of the Northwest Shelf.

Ausimage_Canberra_2014

Description:AUSIMAGE Aerial Imagery Canberra 2014 is a web service of high resolution aerial imagery (10 cm to 18 cm) over Canberra and Queanbeyan, acquired in February and April 2014. AUSIMAGE Aerial Imagery is a data product of Jacobs Group (Australia) Pty Ltd, released by Geoscience Australia as a web map service under license agreement.

Australian Bathymetry and Topography

Description:The Australian Bathymetry and Topography web service includes the topography of Australia and the bathymetry of the adjoining Australian Exclusive Economic Zone. The area selected does not include data from Australia's marine jurisdiction offshore from the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands and the Australian Antarctic Territory. The 2009 bathymetry data were compiled by Geoscience Australia from multibeam and single beam data, and along with the topography (onshore) data, was derived from multiple sources. As per the 2005 grid, the 0.0025 dd resolution is only supported where direct bathymetric observations are sufficiently dense (e.g. where swath bathymetry data or digitised chart data exist) (Webster and Petkovic, 2005). In areas where no sounding data are available (in waters off the Australian shelf), the grid is based on the 2 arc minute ETOPO (Smith and Sandwell, 1997) and 1 arc minute ETOPO (Amante and Eakins, 2008) satellite derived bathymetry. The topographic data (onshore data) is based on the revised Australian 0.0025dd topography grid (Geoscience Australia, 2008), the 0.0025dd New Zealand topography grid (Geographx, 2008) and the 90m SRTM DEM (Jarvis et al, 2008).

Australian Coastal Sediment Compartments

Description:The Australian Coastal Sediment Compartments Web Service provide a hierarchical spatial classification relevant to the assessment of sediment movement in the Australian coastal zone, and represent a tool to assist coastal planning and management. Additional spatial data layers produced during the development of the compartments are provided for reference.

Australian Surface Hydrology (Web Mercator)

Description:This service provides Australian surface hydrology, including natural and man-made features such as water courses (including directional flow paths), lakes, dams and other water bodies. The information was derived from the Surface Hydrology database, with a nominal scale of 1:250,000. The National Basins and Catchments are a national topographic representation of drainage areas across the landscape. Each basin is made up of a number of catchments depending on the features of the landscape. This service shows the relationship between catchments and basins. The service contains layer scale dependencies.

Bathymetry Derivatives Map of Australia

Description:The National Bathymetry Derivatives Map of Australia Web Map Service contains national scale bathymetric derivatives - hillshaded bathymetry and topography, topographic slope, topographic aspect, topographic relief and topographic rugosity, which are available for download on Geoscience Australia¬タルs website. These bathymetric derivatives have been derived from the Australian Bathymetry and Topography Grid, June 2009. Each dataset is gridded to 9 arc second resolution (i.e. approximately 250 m at the equator).

Browse Basin Marine Survey 2014, (GA-0345, GA-0346 and TAN1411) - High Resolution Bathymetry Grids

Description:This web service displays the results of a marine survey conducted by Geoscience Australia in Commonwealth waters of the north-eastern Browse Basin (Caswell Sub-basin) between 9 October and 9 November 2014. The additional codes GA-0345 and GA-0346 refer to Geoscience Australia (GA) internal codes and TAN1411 is the vessel survey number given by the RV Tangaroa for 2014.

CWTH_OPGGSA_2006_Petroleum_Blocks_AMB2006a

Description:Petroleum Blocks cut to the AMB 2006a epoch. This dataset is a digital realisation of the Blocks as defined under Section 33 (3) of the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006. The blocks are created using a 5 minute by 5 minute graticular section that has been trimmed to the extent of the Offshore Area (defined in the same Act). The dataset is comprised of both points and polygons, and is densified to ensure the geometry will remain correct regardless of projection. The dataset's coverage includes areas of coastal waters and land within the constitutional limits of the States and territories, however in these areas the data is indicative only. For titles within the limits of the coastal waters, the relevant State agency should be consulted.

Casey Station Bathymetry Survey 2014-2015 (GA0348-AAD3326) - High Resolution Bathymetry Grids

Description:This web service contains the Casey Station Bathymetry survey that displays one seamless bathymetry grid of 1m resolution. The GA-0348 survey, acquired by Geoscience Australia, Royal Australian Navy and Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) on-board the Research Vessel Howard Burton from the 23rd of December 2014 to the 27th of January 2015. Commonwealth - Coastal Waters (State Powers) Act 1970 and Coastal Water (Northern Territory) Powers Act 1980 - epoch 2014a

Description:This service contains the limit and extent of Section 3 of the Coastal Waters (State Powers) Act 1980, and the Coastal Waters (Northern Territories Powers) Act 1980. NOTE: the Polygon depicting the area of the coastal waters is not constrained on the landward side. The polygon includes areas that fall within the constitutional limits of the States. When information depicting the landward constitutional limit of the States becomes available, the polygon will be constrained.

Description:The service depicts the proclamations made under the Seas and Submerged Lands Act (SSLA) 1973. This includes the continental shelf, the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), territorial sea and territorial sea baselines. NOTE: Two versions of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) are supplied to account for the discrepancy between Seas and Submerged Lands Act 1973. The Proclamation under section 10B (26/07/1994), and unratified Treaty between the Government of Australia and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, establishing an Exclusive Economic Zone Boundary and Certain Seabed Boundaries (Perth, 14 march 1997) [1997] ATNIF 9 - (not yet in force). Although the proclamation remains in force, for many matters the limit modified by the action of the treaty is the limit that should be applied. This is the default depiction of Australia's EEZ.

Aspect measures the direction in which a land surface slope faces. The direction is expressed in degrees from north.

Digital Elevation Model (DEM) Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 1 Second over Australian Bathymetry Topography

Description:This service represents a combination of two data products, the DEM_SRTM_1Second dataset and the Australian_Bathymetry_Topography dataset. This service was created to support the CO2SAP (Co2 Storage application) Project to create a transect elevation graph within the application. This data is not available as a dataset for download as a Geoscience Australia product. The DEM_SRTM_1Second service represents the National Digital Elevation Model (DEM) 1 Second product derived from the National DEM SRTM 1 Second. The DEM represents ground surface topography, with vegetation features removed using an automatic process supported by several vegetation maps. eCat record 72759. The Australian_Bathymetry_Topography service describes the bathymetry dataset of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone and beyond. Bathymetry data was compiled by Geoscience Australia from multibeam and single beam data (derived from multiple sources), Australian Hydrographic Service (AHS) Laser Airborne Depth Sounding (LADS) data, Royal Australian Navy (RAN) fairsheets, the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) bathymetric model, the 2 arc minute ETOPO (Smith and Sandwell, 1997) and 1 arc minute ETOPO satellite derived bathymetry (Amante and Eakins, 2008). Topographic data (onshore data) is based on the revised Australian 0.0025dd topography grid (Geoscience Australia, 2008), the 0.0025dd New Zealand topography grid (Geographx, 2008) and the 90m SRTM DEM (Jarvis et al, 2008). eCat record 67703. IMPORTANT INFORMATION For data within this service that lays out of the Australian boundary the following needs to be considered. This grid is not suitable for use as an aid to navigation, or to replace any products produced by the Australian Hydrographic Service. Geoscience Australia produces the 0.0025dd bathymetric grid of Australia specifically to provide regional and local broad scale context for scientific and industry projects, and public education. The 0.0025dd grid size is, in many regions of this grid, far in excess of the optimal grid size for some of the input data used. On parts of the continental shelf it may be possible to produce grids at higher resolution, especially where LADS or multibeam surveys exist. However these surveys typically only cover small areas and hence do not warrant the production of a regional scale grid at less than 0.0025dd. There are a number of bathymetric datasets that have not been included in this grid for various reasons.

GA Surface Geology of Australia

Description:The Surface Geology web map service provides two seamless national coverages of Australian bedrock and surficial geology, compiled at 1:1 million scale (displays only at scales less than 1:1500000), and 1:2.5 million scale (displays only at scales greater than 1:1500000). It also contains 1:5 million scale geological regions and metamorphic geology. The service represents outcropping or near-outcropping bedrock units, and unconsolidated or poorly consolidated regolith material covering bedrock.

Geological Provinces 2013

Description:The Australian Geological Provinces web map service contains descriptions of the fundamental geological elements of the Australian continent and offshore surrounds. Province types include sedimentary basins, tectonic provinces such as cratons and orogens, igneous provinces, and metallogenic provinces. Spatial data has been captured largely at approximately 1:1M scale for intended use between 1:2M and 1:5M scale. The full 2D spatial extent (i.e. including the extent of a province under any overlying cover material) of each province has been captured.

Geomorphic Features of Australia¬タルs Marine Jurisdiction

Description:The Geomorphic Features of Australia¬タルs Marine Jurisdiction web service brings together various datasets produced by Geoscience Australia that describe the distribution and types of geomorphic features found on the seabed of Australia¬タルs marine jurisdiction. This jurisdiction covers Australia¬タルs Exclusive Economic Zone, including offshore islands and territories. Geomorphic features have been identified using the best available bathymetric data with features generally mapped at a scale of 1:5 000 000.

Geophysical Grids

Description:Web Map Service of Geoscience Australia's national geophysical grids for magnetics, gravity and radiometrics - 2015 edition. The service also contains outlines and descriptions of the airborne geophysical surveys used to compile the magnetic and radiometric grids.

Gippsland 2D Infill 2015 Marine Seismic Survey, (GA-0352)

Description:Geoscience Australia conducted a marine seismic survey (GA-0352) over various areas of the Gippsland Basin, between 5th of April to the 24th of April 2015, by the Gardline CGG vessel MV Duke. This service includes all the bathymetry data collected during the survey, with the data also available as a free download from the Geoscience Australia website. The aim of the survey was to acquire industry-standard precompetitive 2D seismic data, Multi-beam echo-sounder (MBES) and sub-bottom profiling (SBP) data to support an assessment of the CO2 storage potential of the basin. The survey, undertaken as part of the Department of Industry and Science¬タルs National CO2 Infrastructure Plan (NCIP), aimed to identify and characterise indicators of natural hydrocarbon or fluid seepage that may indicate compromised seal integrity in the region. The data collected during this survey will enhance sequence stratigraphic studies in the Gippsland Basin that provide constraints on the most suitable areas for storage of CO2 and help to identify potential CO2 storage reservoirs.

Marine Survey - Geomorphology

Description:The Marine Survey Geomorphology Web Map Service contains the local scale (1:10 000) interpreted geomorphology maps available for download on Geoscience Australia¬タルs website. These interpreted geomorphology maps have been produced for numerous marine survey programs conducted in Australian mainland and Antarctic waters by both Geoscience Australia and our collaborators. Layers are grouped by survey or region and where available include both the Geoscience Australia and vessel survey identification numbers that contributed to each dataset.

Description:The Marine Survey Multibeam Backscatter Web Map Service contains the highest-resolution multibeam backscatter grids available for download on Geoscience Australia¬タルs website. These backscatter grids were collected over numerous multibeam survey programs conducted in Australian mainland and Antarctic waters by both Geoscience Australia and our collaborators. Layers are grouped by survey or region and where available include both the Geoscience Australia and vessel survey identification numbers that contributed to the backscatter grids. Backscatter grids have been rendered over a yellow-bronze colour-ramp with minimum and maximum decibel values being -40 and -10 dB respectively. The resolution of each backscatter grid is also specified in each survey's layer description.

Description:The Marine Survey Multibeam Bathymetry Web Map Service contains the highest-resolution multibeam bathymetry grids available for download on Geoscience Australia¬タルs website. These bathymetry grids were collected over numerous multibeam survey programs conducted in Australian mainland and Antarctic waters by both Geoscience Australia and our collaborators. Layers are grouped by survey or region and where available include both the Geoscience Australia and vessel survey identification numbers that contributed to the bathymetry grids. Bathymetry grids have been rendered over a rainbow colour-ramp with minimum and maximum depth values unique for each survey. These values are specified in each survey's layer description. The resolution of each bathymetry grid is also specified in each survey's layer description.

Proximity to Transmission Infrastructure - Lines (Web Mercator)

Description:This service provides distances to known electricity transmission lines. The distances are represented as a regular grid (raster) surface or as isolines. The proximity values are calculated over Australian land mass, and include inland water bodies. Topography of the terrain and curvature of the earth were not taken into consideration in any calculations i.e. actual traversal distances will be greater than those calculated.
