        <idAbs>&lt;DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"&gt;&lt;DIV&gt;&lt;DIV&gt;&lt;P STYLE="margin:12 0 12 0;"&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;The process of attributing aquifer and aquifer province information to bores is critical for the interpretation of hydrogeological data, as it identifies the hydrostratigraphic unit that occurs within the production zone of a groundwater bore, i.e. the subsurface zone where the bore is open to the aquifer and draws groundwater. Assigning aquifer attribution improves comparison of groundwater data from bores across the investigation area, providing confidence that groundwater data relates to the same hydrostratigraphic unit.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P STYLE="margin:0 0 0 0;"&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;This dataset provides information on the hydrostratigraphic aquifer and aquifer province attribution to the screened/open intervals for groundwater bores in the Kati Thanda - Lake Eyre Basin (KT-LEB) region. (2024).&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P STYLE="margin:0 0 0 0;"&gt;&lt;SPAN /&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P STYLE="margin:0 0 0 0;"&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Confidence in aquifer attribution (in particular for Cenozoic hydrostratigraphic units) varies considerably and is largely dependent on the varying levels of geological understanding that occur across the KT-LEB. For instance, often Cenozoic sediments are not differentiated into individual hydrostratigraphic units. Whilst more general, the aquifer province attribution is useful, particularly where either aquifer attribution is poorly defined or for providing another (broader) level of grouping for hydrogeological data. Aquifer province attribution is particu&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;l&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;a&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;r&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;ly useful if an area includes several stacked or laterally distributed sedimentary basins.             <statement>The process for determining aquifer attribution depends on the type and quality of information available for each bore as well as the size of the investigation area and the study objectives. In this project, determining aquifer and aquifer province attribution and ensuring data consistency between bores in the KT–LEB involved:

• Compiling available bore data from archival state and territory government databases to identify bores in the investigation area that lack aquifer attribution. Relevant bore data compiled at this stage includes bore depth and construction information (specifically the depth of the screened or open interval), water levels, salinity and hydrochemistry data, stratigraphy, and existing aquifer attribution. Sources of archival bore data evaluated for the KT–LEB included Queensland Government (2023), NT Government (2023), SA Government (2023) and NSW Government (2023).

• Compiling aquifer attribution information not already included in state databases from relevant archival projects that overlap the investigation area. Key sources of stratigraphic and aquifer attribution information include Evans et al. (2018), Evans et al. (2020), de Caritat et al. (2022) and Norton and Rollet (2023).

• Cross-checking stratigraphic information from the state and territory groundwater databases and archival projects with other available datasets, such as information from nearby bores with attribution data. Where cross-checking provided consistent results, the hydrostratigraphic information from the groundwater databases was used to populate the aquifer attribution field for the previously unattributed bore. Any inconsistent hydrostratigraphic interpretations were subsequently evaluated using other information sources such as surface geology mapping or the new geological modelling outputs of the Lake Eyre Basin (LEB) developed for this study to identify potential geological causes for the inconsistency, such as presence of a fault or geological contact.

• For any groundwater bores lacking stratigraphic data, an assessment was made as to whether the gap could be infilled using stratigraphic data from other sources. Once stratigraphy was assigned, it was then cross-checked against nearby bores to ensure geological consistency with the interpretation. The new geological model for the LEB was used as an additional crosscheck for the hydrostratigraphic attribution in the Callabonna and Tirari sub-basins.

• Aquifer provinces were determined and attributed using the known association of hydrostratigraphic units with each hydrogeological province. Due to current uncertainties in identifying stratigraphy in the Cenozoic strata of the LEB, it can be difficult to confidently assign hydrostratigraphic units for some bores. However, for bores in which the screened interval or production zone is considered to occur within Cenozoic strata, then the hydrostratigraphy was classified as ‘Cenozoic’ and aquifer province labelled as LEB. In some cases, the bore production interval straddles the geological contact zone between two provinces, and for these situations, the aquifer province field includes both geological provinces, for example, a combined Lake Eyre Basin and Eromanga Basin province.

Over 370 various aquifer formations were categorised into over 40 geological provinces / basins and further classified into four major categories relative to the Lake Eyre Basin stratigraphic position.
