Surficial Geology Of The Vestfold Hills
The Surficial Geology of the Vesthold Hills web map service depicts the surficial material units based on the Geological Survey of Canada Surficial Data Model. On the coast of Prydz Bay, the region is one of the largest ice-free areas in Antarctica. Surficial geology mapping at 1:2000 was undertaken with field observations in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 summer seasons as well as aerial photography and satellite imagery interpretation. Units are based on the Geological Survey of Canada Surficial Data Model Version 2.4.0 (Deblonde et al 2019).

Geologic Unit Polygons
This GIS dataset includes 16 surficial material units. Unit classifications are based on the Geological Survey ofCanada Surficial Data Model Version 2.4.0 (Deblonde et al. 2019) because of its focus on glacial processes and glaciatedenvironments. Units are defined based on the genesis of their dominant materials and their morphology, depositional environment, and thickness. Numbers denote subcategories. Most unit boundaries aregradational. Unit boundaries were mapped from aerial photography (Australian Antarctic Data Centre 1997),satellite imagery (DigitalGlobe Inc 2018), and field observations. The moraine complex (Tm) and SørsdalFormation (Tv/GMo) boundaries are based on published boundaries (Australian Antarctic Data Centre1997; Harris 1999) and have been refined further with remote sensing interpretation.Fieldwork was conducted in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 summer seasons, supported by the AustralianAntarctic Program under Australian Antarctic Science Project 4393.Mapping was completed at 1:2000 and is best viewed in a digital format.

Samples
Samples
The Geoscience Australia Geological Observations and Samples database contains locations, geological observations, and descriptions of physical samples (specimens) from field sites, measured sections and boreholes associated with Geoscience Australia geological mapping surveys in Australia, its surrounds, and Antarctica since the 1960's. Descriptions include information on lithology, stratigraphy, alteration, structural measurements, and many other geological attributes. This feature class is a subset of the database for observations used in creating this surficial geology map.
